Tips for your Cash Receipt
- Write the amount in words as well as figures ("Two hundred forty dollars") — it makes the receipt much harder to alter.
- Count the cash in front of the payer and fill in the receipt before they leave.
- Give the original to the payer and keep a numbered copy for yourself; never leave blank lines that could be filled in later.
- Cash income is taxable income in most countries — log every cash receipt so your records match what you report.
Frequently asked questions
Is a handwritten cash receipt valid?
Usually yes, as long as it shows who paid whom, how much, when, and for what, and is signed by the person receiving the money. A typed PDF receipt is easier to read and store.
Do I have to report cash payments as income?
In most countries, yes — cash income is taxed the same way as other income. Keeping a receipt for every cash payment makes your bookkeeping and tax return straightforward.
What if a customer pays partly in cash and partly by card?
List the amount paid by each method on the receipt (e.g. "$100 cash, $140 card") so the total matches what you actually received through each channel.
