Required information on an invoice in Japan

  • Issuer’s name and qualified invoice registration number (“T” + 13 digits)
  • Transaction date
  • Description of goods or services, marking items subject to the 8% reduced rate

  • Consumption tax amount per tax rate
  • Recipient’s name
  • Invoice number and payment due date (practical, not legally mandated)

Rules and tips for Japan

  • Qualified Invoice System (インボイス制度): since October 2023 only invoices from registered issuers allow the buyer full input-tax credit, so most B2B clients expect your T-number.
  • Businesses with taxable sales of ¥10 million or less in the base period are exempt from consumption tax unless they register as qualified invoice issuers.
  • The 8% reduced rate applies mainly to food and beverages (excluding alcohol and dining out) and newspaper subscriptions.
  • Invoices exchanged electronically must be kept in electronic form under the Electronic Bookkeeping Act. Keep invoices for 7 years.
