VAT rates in Germany (2026)
The standard rate of 19% applies to most goods and services. Reduced rates (7%) apply only to specific goods and services defined by law. Locally, the tax is called Umsatzsteuer (USt.) / Mehrwertsteuer (MwSt.). Registration / small-business threshold: €25,000 previous-year and €100,000 current-year turnover (§ 19 UStG).
Good to know
- Kleinunternehmer (§ 19 UStG): since 2025 you can skip VAT if turnover was at most €25,000 in the previous year and stays at most €100,000 in the current year. State the exemption on every invoice.
- B2B e-invoicing: since 1 January 2025 every business must be able to receive structured e-invoices (XRechnung or ZUGFeRD). Issuing them becomes mandatory from 2027 for businesses with prior-year turnover above €800,000 and from 2028 for all; plain PDFs remain allowed until then.
How it’s calculated
VAT is charged as a percentage of the net (pre-tax) price. To add it, multiply the net amount by the rate; to find the net amount inside a tax-inclusive price, divide the gross amount by 1 plus the rate.
A common mistake is to remove VAT by subtracting the rate from the gross price (e.g. 119 − 19% = 96.39). That is wrong — the correct net amount is 119 ÷ 1.19 = 100.
Gross = Net × (1 + rate ÷ 100)VAT = Net × rate ÷ 100Net = Gross ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100)
