Calculation

US sales tax is set by states, counties and cities, so the combined rate depends on where the buyer takes delivery. Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no statewide sales tax (Alaska allows local sales taxes). Look up the combined rate for the delivery address on your state’s tax website.

Price before tax$100.00

Total with tax$108.00

How it’s calculated

Sales tax is a percentage of the pre-tax price. To add it, multiply the price by the rate. To back it out of a tax-inclusive total, divide the total by 1 plus the rate.

  • Sales tax = Price × rate ÷ 100
  • Total = Price × (1 + rate ÷ 100)
  • Price before tax = Total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100)

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate sales tax?

Multiply the pre-tax price by the combined sales tax rate. For a $250 sale at 8.25%, the tax is $250 × 0.0825 = $20.63 and the total is $270.63.

How do I find the pre-tax price from a total?

Divide the total by 1 plus the rate. A total of $108.00 at 8% means a pre-tax price of $108.00 ÷ 1.08 = $100.00 and $8.00 of tax.

Which sales tax rate should I use?

Use the combined state and local rate for the place where the buyer receives the goods or service. Many states publish a rate lookup by address.

Do I charge sales tax on services?

It depends on the state. Many states tax few services, while others tax a wide range. Check your state’s rules for your specific service.
