Tips for your Car Sale Receipt
- A receipt does not transfer ownership on its own — you still need to sign over the title or registration document and notify the licensing authority as your state or country requires.
- Record the exact time of handover; it helps settle who is responsible for parking tickets, tolls or accidents around the sale.
- In the US, federal law requires an odometer disclosure when ownership of most vehicles is transferred — note the mileage accurately.
- Only hand over keys once payment has cleared. Verify cashier's checks directly with the issuing bank.
- Both parties should keep a signed copy, and the seller should remove plates where local rules require it.
Frequently asked questions
Is a car sale receipt the same as a bill of sale?
They serve a similar purpose. Some states and countries require a specific bill of sale form for registration, so check with your motor vehicle authority; a detailed receipt is still a useful record for both parties.
What does "sold as-is" mean?
It means the buyer accepts the vehicle in its current condition with no warranty from the seller. Consumer protection laws may still apply in some cases, especially to dealers.
Does a private seller charge sales tax on a car?
In many US states, private sellers do not collect sales tax; the buyer pays any tax and fees when registering the vehicle. Rules differ by state and country.
