Tips for your Photography Receipt
- State the usage rights included (personal use, commercial license) — clients often assume they can use images for anything.
- If you took a non-refundable retainer, show it as already paid and deduct it from the total.
- List extra images, prints and albums separately so clients can see what was optional.
- Note the expected delivery date for the final gallery to set expectations.
Frequently asked questions
Should a photography receipt mention copyright?
It is good practice to restate the license granted (e.g. "personal use license") and that copyright remains with the photographer unless your contract says otherwise.
Is a session retainer refundable?
Many photographers make retainers non-refundable because the date is reserved. Whatever your policy, state it in the contract and on the receipt.
Do I charge tax on prints?
Prints and other physical products are often taxable even where services are not. Check your local sales tax or VAT rules.
