Small Business invoicing tips
- Use a consistent, sequential invoice numbering system — it makes bookkeeping and tax time much easier.
- Show sales tax or VAT as a separate line and include your tax registration number where required.
- Offer an early-payment discount (e.g. 2% if paid within 10 days) to speed up cash flow.
- List every way customers can pay — card, bank transfer, check — with the details they need.
- Follow up overdue invoices on a schedule: a friendly reminder at 3 days, a firm one at 14, a call at 30.
Recommended payment terms
Whatever you choose, agree on the terms before you start, write the exact due date and late-payment policy on the invoice, and send it as soon as the work (or milestone) is delivered.
