What to include on a receipt

A receipt should let both you and your customer prove what was paid:

  • Receipt number and date. A unique number makes each receipt easy to find in your records.
  • Seller details. Your business name, address and tax number where applicable.
  • What was paid for. Items or services, quantities and prices.
  • Amount, tax and payment method. Total paid, any tax included, and how the customer paid.
  • Payment date and balance. When the payment was received and whether anything is still outstanding.

Some countries have specific receipt rules (for example, fiscal receipts for retail). This is general information, not legal or tax advice.

Receipt generator FAQ

What is the difference between a receipt and an invoice?

An invoice asks for payment; a receipt confirms that payment has been received. Many businesses send an invoice first and a receipt once the client has paid.

Can I make a receipt for a partial payment or deposit?

Yes. Enter the amount received in “Amount paid”. The receipt shows the total, the amount paid and the remaining balance.

Does the receipt show it was paid?

Yes. Receipts get a “PAID” stamp automatically, plus the payment date and method you enter.

Can I add sales tax or VAT to a receipt?

Yes. Add a tax rate, or turn on “prices already include tax” if your prices are tax-inclusive — the receipt then shows the tax contained in the total.

Is the receipt generator free?

Yes — unlimited receipts with PDF download and printing, no sign-up required.

Where are my receipts stored?

In your own browser only. Download the PDFs you need to keep, because clearing your browser data removes saved documents.
